La Strada Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary
When music filled the streets of Mikulov, Czech Republic for the first time and theater performers, acrobats and street artists appeared among the small Moravian town’s historic buildings, few could have imagined that a tradition was being born. Since then, the La Strada street art festival has become an indispensable attraction of Mikulov’s cultural summer, celebrating a major milestone this July—its tenth edition.
La Strada brings art to Mikulov in its most natural form. No tickets, no barriers, and often no boundaries between artist and audience. For a few days, the historic center transforms into a living gallery and an open stage where musicians, actors, acrobats, visual artists, and visitors of all generations come together. La Strada is based on the idea that culture belongs in public spaces for the casual passerby to discover the magic of street art.
Over the past ten years, the festival has gained a loyal audience. Locals and tourists alike have come to expect the start of the summer holidays in Mikulov to be marked by La Strada. Its charm lies in its unique atmosphere—every edition is different, every performance has a direct interaction with the audience, and every spectator becomes part of the show. Another distinctive feature is the principle of voluntary “tip jar” contributions, which fosters a direct relationship between the artist and the audience and recalls the original tradition of street art.
The tenth anniversary offered a colorful mosaic of performances. Visitors could see a theater piece by the Mikro-teatro troupe, an energetic acrobatic show by the duo Nikki & Beto, an original performance by Koťátka zkázy, concerts by the bands Čóro muzikoj and the NIŠMA klezmer trio, as well as other musical and theatrical performances. The program was complemented by art workshops, creative workshops, hand-poke tattoos, and a concert at the Mikulov synagogue. The festival once again demonstrated that street art takes many forms and can appeal to visitors of all ages.
The ten-year history of La Strada is, above all, a story of people—organizers, volunteers, artists, and audience members—who create a unique atmosphere together. Thanks to their enthusiasm, what began as a simple idea has grown into a much-loved cultural event, enriching the life of the town every year and bringing visitors to Mikulov from across the country and abroad.
The tenth edition was thus not only a celebration of a single festival but also a reminder that public space can be a place for community, joy, inspiration, and shared cultural experiences. Over the past ten years, La Strada has proven that art doesn’t need a roof or a curtain—all it takes is the street, an open mind, and people willing to pause for a moment.
An additional feature is that La Strada takes place together with the Open Wine Cellars event in Mikulov, where a wide variety of Moravian wines can be tasted.
